Joe Gibbs Racing announced Wednesday that Denny Hamlin will not compete in this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series event in Mexico City. Ryan Truex will substitute in the No. 11 Yahoo Toyota.

Hamlin, who will miss his first full race since 2014 when a shard of metal in his eye sidelined him, is out due to the birth of his first son.

“We are happy to announce the birth of our son. Everyone is doing well,” Hamlin shared in a statement alongside a family photo. “My main priority is to be here at home for Jordan and our family over the next few days when she is able to go home and we transition to life as a family of five.”

Joe Gibbs Racing confirmed they will apply for a playoff waiver to preserve Hamlin’s postseason eligibility. It is worth noting that NASCAR made it clear during the offseason that the birth of a child is an acceptable reason to request a waiver.

Hamlin added that he plans to return at Pocono.
