Love Wins Eventful Nu Way 225 at World Wide Technology Raceway
MADISON, I.L. - Jesse Love earned his first win of the 2026 NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts season. For Love it marked his first win since winning the championship at Phoenix last season and the 4th of his O'Reilly career. But unfortunately for Love, his win will likely be overshadowed by other things that occurred in the race.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first story of the race came in the conclusion of stage one after Carson Kvapil picked up a big-time stage win. During the pit cycle, a stack-up caused Rajah Caruth to get turned causing his car to get big damage on the front end, while Nick Sanchez ended up crashing into the car of Brent Crews, whose car was being serviced and his pit crew was hit by the spinning Sanchez.
With good grace, thankfully everyone on pit road was okay physically, but the incident left behind big time carnage as no one could get by the blockade.
Nick Sanchez's car was completely destroyed, and the same for Harrison Burton. Anthony Alfredo had left front damage along with Jeremy Clements who had more significant damage and had to get repairs done in the garage.
The biggest person impacted in the crash was Brandon Jones however, as he sustained both front and rear damage to his car. Jones was able to recover to a 15th place effort come the end of the race, but the car was never competitive enough to compete in the mix, as the damage was simply too significant putting a big blow to his Chase hopes. Jones leave World Wide Technology Raceway -76 points off the lead.
As for Caruth, similar to Jones his damage was major, but his car was better driving. Caruth was able to rebound to 11th, but after the race Caruth emphasized his frustration as mechanical issues at Darlington and bad luck tonight cost him big points when running well early. Caruth leaves Madison -118 points off the lead meaning his championship hopes are likely dashed with 7 races remaining.
But no, that wasn't even the biggest story of the night. In fact, far from it at all.
Leaving Gateway, what everyone will be talking about is the saga that continues between William Sawalich and Corey Day. With 47 laps to go, the two raced side by side battling for 5th. Out of turn two, both cars made contact, and down the back stretch Sawalich turned left blatantly, seeking out revenge from an incident the weekend prior at Darlington.
Day went crashing nose first into the inside wall, having the front end of his car completely destroyed. Day was unable to continue, and his day was over as he finished 33rd and leaves Gateway -69 points out of the lead.
At the medical center Day was careful in what he said to the media but said stated that the message from the conversation last week was clearly not delivered. There was no conversation after the race unlike the weekend prior, but the person having the conversation instead this time was Jr Motorsports driver Justin Allgaier.
When Sawalich turned left, Day went spinning off Allgaier's nose giving him damage. Allgaier had to pit for damage, lost track position, and for the second straight weekend, finished outside the top ten, as he finished 13th. For Allgaier, what was a day where he would leave with a points lead, ended up being a day that lost him the lead instead. Allgaier leaves Gateway frustrated, but composed, and trails Sheldon Creed by three points.
As for Love, he won stage two and put himself into position to win the race in the final stage. With the Day caution, the green flag pit stop cycle never happened, and Love had to get physical to make the win happen. Despite having to give the bumper to Carson Kvapil, Love did it cleanly and took the lead and never looked back. A statement win for the defending champion.
OTHER NOTES:
Sheldon Creed was back to his old ways as he earned a 2nd place effort after winning at Darlington the weekend previous to become the points leader.
Despite early trouble for Taylor Gray after spinning early in stage one after making contact with Rajah Caruth, Gray played the strategy carefully earning himself a 4th place finish, the best of the Gibbs bunch. Gray came on strong very late as he was also fast in practice but perhaps needed a caution to be in the mix for the win. It was a promising redemption the 33-year-old.
As for the underdog story, Kyle Sieg finished 9th and earned a career high in top ten finishes as he earned his second of the season. Last weekend at Darlington, Sieg showed big time speed earning stage points, but fell out of contention late. Sieg earned an 8th at Atlanta and jumps to 24th in points with the result.
As for Jeb Burton, after disappointment the season prior, where he lost brakes early on in the race causing him to miss the then Playoffs, Burton got some redemption this year. Jeb earned his 3rd top ten finish of the season with his 10th place effort and now has two top ten finishes in the last three races. Jordan Anderson Racing is perhaps starting to find its momentum.
