HAMPTON, G.A. – After rain delayed the start of the second Craftsman Truck Series race of the season, NASCAR fans were treated to a spectacular race that saw Spire Motorsports driver Kyle Busch win his third straight truck race at EchoPark Speedway. The race was unique as a 4:20 PM ET drop dead time was enforced causing the race to run ten laps shy of scheduled distance. The race was originally slated for 135 laps, ultimately they completed 125.
For Busch this win marked the 68th of his Craftsman Truck Series career. It is also the 14th consecutive season in which Busch has won a race in the series. Busch did not win the race alone though, as teammate Carson Hocevar played a big factor in his win, as he opted to push the #7 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet rather than forcing a pass. As result, Hocevar crossed the line in 2nd, resulting in Spire Motorsports first ever 1-2 finish in the Craftsman Truck Series.
In a race that saw 14 lead changes, there were many strong cars that suffered from issues. In stage two, ThorSport Racing's Ty Majeski hit the wall and had to make an extra lap around the track before pitting, resulting him a 28th place finish. He was not the only ThorSport front runner that had issues as teammate Ben Rhodes who was celebrating his 29h birthday, ran out of gas late in the second stage causing him to lose a lap and not get the lucky dog.
Luckily for Rhodes, his truck was fast enough to allow him to rebound, as not only was he able to get on the lead lap after the lap 102 caution, but he was also able to charge to a spectacular 4th place finish over the final 23 laps.
Halmar Friesen Racing owner Stewart Friesen continued to shine on draft tracks as he shocked everyone by winning on the second stage on the bottom lane. Friesen was in the mix for the win in the closing laps, but a voltage issue caused him to lose pace late knocking him out of the running for the win. Friesen ultimately finished 20th, taking a brutal blow to what was near story book day.
