OFFICIAL: Christian Lundgaard Replacing Scott Dixon at Chip Ganassi Racing in 2027

A long-rumored move became official Tuesday morning, as Chip Ganassi Racing announced the addition of Christian Lundgaard.

The 25-year-old Danish driver will replace Scott Dixon in the No. 9 Honda, a seat the six-time NTT INDYCAR Series champion had occupied since 2003, before it was announced in June that he and defending Indianapolis 500 winner Felix Rosenqvist would leave their respective teams to race for Arrow McLaren. That move left Christian Lundgaard, then second in the standings, without a ride until Tuesday.

Lundgaard had an impressive 2026 campaign, notching a pair of victories at Road America and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course en route to a third place points finish.

"We are excited to welcome Christian," team owner Chip Ganassi said. "We know he's capable of accomplishing even more in the NTT INDYCAR Series, and we're looking forward to helping him reach that next level with the No. 9 team. He's already proven he can win races, and it isn't often a driver of this caliber becomes available."

Much of Lundgaard's fallout with Tony Kanaan, Zak Brown, and Arrow-McLaren came from his lack of performance of ovals, mustering just one top five finish at the track type in two seasons with a team that has its eyes firmly set on building a roster with a focus on winning the Indianapolis 500.

Lundgaard will retain Dixon's former sponsor PNC Bank for his effort in 2027, marking his second major free agency move in just five seasons as a full-time driver. He joined Arrow-McLaren ahead of the 2025 season after three years with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, a period highlighted by an eighth place points finish in 2023, as well as his first career victory on the streets of Toronto that same season.

"It is an honor and a privilege to join Chip Ganassi Racing beginning next season," Lundgaard said in a CGR release Tuesday morning. "The fact that it is in the iconic No. 9 PNC Bank Honda makes it even more special. CGR has set the standard in INDYCAR for decades, and the opportunity to be part of that legacy is something I've worked toward my entire career. I'm incredibly excited about what's ahead."

Lundgaard will race alongside Kyffin Simpson and five-time series champion Alex Palou, hoping to eventually hoist the hardware himself.
